Osteoporosis – A silent bone disease, a condition in which bones become weak and brittle because of loss of mineral density or low bone density and it develops slowly over years.
Bone health plays an important role in our daily movement.
What Causes?
- Consumption of low mineral diet
- Intake of steroids
- Long term medications of some drugs
- Missing regular exercise
- Low body mass index
Diagnosis:
Bone Density Scan (DEXA)
Dexa Scan is a medical imaging test. It is a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. It is a most helpful scan to test the bone density in the cases of Osteoporosis.
Dexa scan uses very low levels of x-rays and it is easy and painless.
Dexa scan will be performed considering risk factors like:
- Old age people
- People with family history of Osteoporosis or fractures
- Long term medicated people
It is suggested to get DEXA scan or bone density scan done once in every couple of years to track the bone changes.
